May SAL with Knitabulls & Knitting in Circles

April 3, 2012 ::: Events, Feature, Fiber Fun

Exciting news! I am doing a May SAL (Spinalong) in conjunction with the Knitabulls Podcast and Knitting in Circles Podcast. The SAL will begin on May 1st, and end on June 18th.

There are two fiber colorways that I have designed specifically for Diane (Knitabulls) and Aimee (Knitting in Circles). See below.

The first pre-order is on sale right now in my shop.

Knitabulls Franklin ColorwayFroggy Monkey Colorway

There are 10 different fiber bases to choose from. A total of 25 pre-order listings will be available today. Another 25 pre-order listings will be posted this Friday morning.

I will have another pre-order take place later in the month, but if you want your fiber by May 1st, it’s best to get in on the initial pre-order! (Especially for those ordering outside the US.) For the second pre-order, the choices of fiber bases will be limited to Polwarth/Silk and Superwash Merino.

For full contest details about the May SAL, please check out the Knitabulls Podcast and Knitting in Circles Podcast.

New Policy on Custom Dye Orders

March 28, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

Dyeing is an extremely physical job.

Let me set the scene for you…

My dye pots weigh anywhere from 20-50+ lbs when filled with just water. I typically have no less than 3 dye pots going at one time for a span of at least 5-8 hours, 1-2 days a week. I’m in constant motion when dyeing — similar to a “last chance workout” that you would see on the TV show, The Biggest Loser.

Because of how labor intensive the dye process is, it takes a great toll on your body, which has caused me to review my current custom order policies. Lately, I have been dyeing 3-5 days a week. While I am INCREDIBLY grateful for the orders, it is very important that I have some down time in between dyeing days to recuperate so I can keep all of GnomeAcres going. If I’m dyeing all the time, mini skeins aren’t being made, fiber isn’t restocked, blogs aren’t written, social media is ignored, Phat Fiber contributions start to suffer, shop updates get behind, my previously broken tailbone starts to flare up, and, most of all, my family starts to give me the evil eye.

Starting today, March 28th, any custom dye orders that come in past Monday of any given week, will be processed on the “Dye Day” of the following week. I typically dye every Sunday and/or Monday. Having said that, if I have the time and ability to squeeze in an order in between designated Dye Days, I will definitely let you know.

Hopefully you all can understand the need for the new policy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

New Season, New Colorways

March 21, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

With the arrival of the new season, of which I’m calling “Sprimmer”, I’ve been working on creating some new colorways for both yarn and fiber.

This past week I came up with three new yarn colorways; The Burrow, Dean Winchester and Maleficent.

The Burrow is dyed on a bulky Superwash Merino yarn that is sooo squishy and delicious.

Dean Winchester is dyed on a bulky Peruvian Highland & Superfine Alpaca blend. It seemed only natural to use something called “Superfine” when in relationship to “Dean Winchester”. Hubba, hubba…

Maleficent was created by special request from a fellow Twitter peep. I’m in wuv with this new bright green dye I have. In fact, I’ve already use it to create another super secret yarn colorway that will debut with the April Phat Fiber box. More info on that next week.

All of these yarns will be available in the shop update this Friday morning. It’s going to be a big one!

P.S. A new mini skein bundle will be available on Friday!  <|:0)

March’s Phat Fiber Contribution: Beaker

March 6, 2012 ::: Feature, Fiber Fun, Products

This is the third month that I’ve contributed to the Phat Fiber box. It’s been so much fun! This month’s theme is “Blinded by Science”. I decided to draw my inspiration from something that is big at my house right now, The Muppets — and more specifically, “Beaker“.

(Pssst…if you don’t know about Phat Fiber yet, check out their site for details.)

Beaker is a specially formulated blend of merino (Clementine & Slimer from my shop), llama, bamboo and fake cashmere. It is super soft and has some great shimmer to it, thanks to the bamboo.

There are 20 samples of “Beaker in a Petri Dish” that will be going out in this month’s box. I will also have a special coupon code on the Phat Fiber Secret Site, so watch your emails for the link!

Already working on next month’s theme, “Tea Party”. I’m adding my own spin to this. All I can say is that The Hulk might have been invited to tea…

Gnomemade Knit Items Sale

March 5, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

You might have noticed over the past couple weeks that I have discounted all knit items in the shop by at least 20%. I have decided to discontinue my “Gnomemade Knit Items” for  now. Since having thumb surgery 2 months ago, I have not been able to hold knitting needles. Being able to restock any knitting items, or take custom orders for them, is just not physically possible at this time.

So, my loss is your gain! There are some really great items in my shop right now; iPad covers, hats and a handspun alpaca cowl. I also have some Kindle covers, Nook covers and purses that I will be taking with me to the Green with Indie Craft Show this coming weekend on March 10th. If you’d like to see some of the products I don’t currently have listed, please contact me and I’ll be happy to send you photos.

Fiber Friday: Podcast #1

March 2, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

My very first podcast! Woohoo!

Filled with fiber-y and yarn-y updates. Hope you enjoy!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

February 24, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

An unfortunate chain of events over the past couple months has led to this blog post. Not 1, not 2, not 3…but 4 vendors I use on a regular basis have raised their prices. As a result, I’m going to have to raise my prices in response.

Starting tomorrow, Saturday, February 25th, the cost of hand dyed yarn will be increased. I’m hoping that this will be the last increase for a while, but I don’t know for certain.

Please believe me when I say that I have spent countless hours over the past two months trying to find new vendors with cheaper pricing. My family…of whom sat and watched me call and scour the web endlessly on “family nights”…can attest to this.

I appreciate everyone supporting GnomeAcres thus far, and hope that it can continue.

…..

Ok, on to happier news. There is going to be a BIG shop update tomorrow. My plan is to have it in place by 10am CST. There’s currently some fiber drying that is trying to make it later than that, but what it doesn’t know is that I’m about to take away its iPhone so it can stop playing “Plants vs Zombies” and get down to drying business.

What’s in the update? I created a new colorway called, “Animal”, as a tribute to Baby Gnome’s current obsession with The Muppets, and more importantly, Animal. I also have a big batch of Backwoods Gnome, Nightwing, Hermione, Bumble Bee and Ninja Cupcake. There will be a new mini skein bundle and 4 fiber braids as well.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Here Kitty, Kitty…

February 6, 2012 ::: Feature, Products

A few days ago, a beautiful Kitten showed up on my doorstep. You could even call him a Fancy Kitty because of all of the shiny bling on him. He also has a beautiful golden coat…

Kitten Carder

I mean, really, just look at him! –>

I have been planning for nearly a year to get a drum carder. I knew about one month in to wanting one, that I wanted to get a Fancy Kitty brand carder. Anyone I have ever talked to has had nothing but great things to say about them. Then, a close friend of mine got one. She let me pet it. I fell in wuv.

So, I saved for a year, knowing that the gazillion fleeces I have to process would eventually be set free from their Rubbermaid container prison. But, where would I put the carder once I got it?

A month ago, Hubby Gnome and I drew up some plans for a workbench. Then I had surgery on my thumb. So, the project turned into a, “Hey, honey. I have stitches. I’ll have to just supervise the project.”

Most people would love this situation. I am not most people. I love using power tools. I love getting sawdust in my hair. And I LOVE building things.

After a weekend of blood, sweat and tears — yes, ALL of those elements were present — the workbench was 87% finished. Given that 87% is a pretty high percentage, I used my “supervisor” skills and ordered the carder thinking that the table could be completed during the week, or the next weekend.

Workbench

Enter Baby Gnome with a cold.

So, the carder arrived, and the workbench wasn’t done. The carder sat on my kitchen table for 1.3 grueling days.

I’m extremely impatient when a new toy arrives.

After I fed my crew cookies and milk…and by “crew”, I mean Hubby Gnome…we finished up the workbench and installed it in my workshop.

I attribute the speedy completion of the project to those delicious Market Pantry chocolate chip cookies.

Anywho, I will now have drum carded fiber batts available in the shop on a regular basis. I’m calling the batts my “Pangea Series”.

Hope you enjoy the new fiber eye candy!

See you at CampKIP!

January 26, 2012 ::: Events, Feature

It’s official! I’m going to be a vendor at CampKIP in New Haven, MO in April!

CampKIP is a camp dedicated to knitters. You come to relax, knit, drink wine, knit, eat, knit, hang out…knit…you get the picture. The part I’m really excited about is that I’ll get to meet some of my AWESOMESAUCE customers that have found me through Twitter, Ravelry, Etsy or the Phat Fiber box. I’ll be selling my yarn & fiber there on Monday, April 23 and Friday, April 27.

The theme for this year’s camp is…wait for it…GNOMES! Seriously, how could I pass this chance up?! Once I found out the theme was gnomes, I decided that I have to contribute to the goody bag they give out to all the participants. So, I’m currently working on 300 fantabulous “things” to put in the goody bags. Yup, I said 300.

Camp #1 is still currently open for registration if you’re interested. Here’s the CampKIP website with all the details and a link to the Ravelry group.

Hope to see some of you there!

P.S. I dyed some brand new yarn & fiber colorways today! They’ll be up in the shop on Saturday!
